Senator Cory Booker announced his engagement to Alexis Lewis in a social media post on Tuesday.

Lewis is a vice president of investments at Brasa Capital Management, and she’s earned a bachelor’s degree from New York University and a master of business administration from Cornell University’s S.C. Johnson College of Business, according to her bio. Booker had been largely private about the relationship— he told the Washington Examiner last month that the pair had been dating for about the past year and that they live in D.C. together.

“Alexis is one of the greatest unearned blessings of my life,” Booker wrote in an Instagram post. “She has transformed me, helping me to ground and center my inner life, and discover the joys of building a nurturing home with someone you love.”

Booker, who is seeking re-election next year and may be considering a 2028 run for president, released five photos from their engagement, including one on a beach.  They were engaged in Hawaii.

“I am savoring the soul-affirming wonder of everyday life with my partner, best friend, and now my fiancée,” Booker wrote. “We are excited for this journey ahead, having so much fun, and feeling deeply grateful for the love, support, and energy so many of you have shared with us. We are truly blessed to be surrounded by such a beautiful community lifting us in love and commitment.”

Daniel Sforza, the executive editor of The (Bergen) Record and the state editor of Gannett’s other daily newspapers, is departing within the next month, leaving questions about the struggling chain’s future as it struggles to sell newspapers in a digital age, the New Jersey Globe has confirmed.

The reason for Sforza’s rumored exit is unclear.  A spokesperson for Gannett declined to comment this morning, but Sforza has already informed colleagues.

If Sforza leaves, it comes after a troubled record at the helm.

In 2021, journalists for the Bergen Record, along with the Daily Record and the New Jersey Herald, voted overwhelmingly to unionize, with Sforza, perhaps with no choice, facing allegations of union busting.

Employees at six Gannett newspapers in New Jersey, including the Bergen Record, Daily Record, and New Jersey Herald, staged a one-day strike in November 2022, four days before the midterm election.   The same six newspapers saw a second one-day walkout in June 2023, the day before the primary election.

A 2025 walkout was averted after Gannett finally agreed to a contract after a four-year wait.  More than half of the journalists who signed the initial letter agreeing to unionize had already departed.

In June, New Jersey eliminated mandates that local and county governments publish public notices in newspapers, a move that could significantly impact revenues.

A few New Jersey-based journalists have taken Gannett’s latest buyout offer, but it’s not immediately clear who.

Print circulation for the Bergen Record has plummeted since Gannett bought the newspaper from the Borg family for a reported $39.3 million, from 136,074 daily newspapers at the end of 2016 to just 14,196 at the end of last year.

Sforza, 54, has been with The Record since 1994, and became executive editor in 2018 after a series of corporate transitions that followed Gannett’s purchase of the newspaper two years earlier.  He is also the executive editor of the Daily Record and the New Jersey Herald.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution will transition entirely to digital at the end of this year, becoming one of the largest U.S. newspapers to discontinue print editions.  The Star-Ledger ended its print publications in February while shuttering its editorial board and closing several dailies, including the Jersey Journal and the Trenton Times.

When the Star-Ledger stopped printing newspapers, Sforza insisted it had no plans to follow them.

A second Democratic candidate is launching a campaign against Rep. Chris Smith (R-Manchester), undeterred by Smith’s decades-long tenure in Washington and the strong Republican lean of his 4th congressional district.

Keith Doll, a registered nurse at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, announced today that he’ll run to unseat Smith, whom he accused of voting in “lockstep” with President Donald Trump’s agenda.

“Rather than speak out against the corruption of all levels of government and the misinformation that threatens our functioning economy and democracy, Representative Smith has insulated himself in his home far away from constituents,” Doll said in a statement. “It is time we finally hold him accountable for over 40 years of votes, most recently the near-full implementation of Project 2025 and the incredibly damaging Big Beautiful Bill, that represent his own desire to maintain political power over the people he is supposed to represent.”

One other Democrat is already running for Smith’s seat: Julie Flynn, a professor at Rutgers University who went public with her campaign last week. More Democratic candidates could still be on their way, though the dark-red hue of the 4th district, which spans parts of Ocean and Monmouth Counties along the Jersey Shore, may discourage many from running.

Doll isn’t entirely a newcomer to politics; in 2017, he ran for a borough council seat in the Union County suburb of New Providence, falling a few hundred votes short. Since then, he’s moved to Middletown in Monmouth County, where he’s raising three young children with his wife.

In his campaign announcement, Doll leaned into a populist, anti-corruption message, saying that he will refuse corporate PAC money for his campaign and fight against billionaires and corporations in Congress.

“This campaign will highlight the continued struggles of working people to make a living in the world’s richest nation,” he said. “While a handful of billionaires and the elite buy our elections to funnel corporate profits into their own pockets, our elected leaders sell out our freedoms and souls by representing their own career interests rather than our rights to life, liberty, and property.”

Smith was first elected all the way back in 1980, when he unseated scandal-tarred Rep. Frank Thompson (D-Trenton) in an upset, and he’s won re-election 22 times since then in a district that’s steadily shifted away from its original boundaries. Smith is now best known in Washington for his work on global human rights – he’s currently the chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on Africa – and his staunch opposition to abortion.

Smith’s record is one that local Democrats have objected to for years, but they haven’t had much electoral success against him, especially after Democratic mapmakers made the 4th district much more conservative ahead of the 2022 elections in order to shore up neighboring districts held by Democrats. In 2024, Smith beat his Democratic opponent Matt Jenkins by a 67%-32% margin.

In fact, if Smith is to face a serious challenge in 2026, it’s more likely to come from a fellow Republican than a Democrat. Smith has made some intra-party enemies over the years, especially from the Trumpier wing of his party, though no Republican has yet taken steps towards a campaign against him next year.

One of the nation’s largest gun violence prevention groups endorsed Hoboken Councilwoman Emily Jabbour for mayor, she announced Tuesday.

Everytown for Gun Safety Action Fund endorsed Jabbour, who founded the Hudson County Chapter of Moms Demand Action in 2016; Moms Demand Action is a subsidiary of Everytown. The group proposes several reforms to address gun violence in the country, including universal background checks, the prohibition of assault weapons, and “Red Flag” laws. Jabbour said she started the Moms Demand Action chapter after witnessing an active shooter drill in her daughter’s pre-K school.

“I am honored to receive the endorsement of Everytown for Gun Safety, the largest gun violence prevention organization in America,” Jabbour said in the release. “As mayor, I’ll continue to treat gun violence prevention like the life-saving issue it is. My administration will focus on prevention, not just reaction.”

Hoboken Mayor Ravi Bhalla is all but guaranteed to win a 32nd district seat in the General Assembly come November. Jabbour has served as a councilwoman since 2018.

Jabbour is one of three Hoboken mayoral candidates to receive Everytown’s “Gun Sense Candidate” distinction. Hoboken Councilman Michael Russo and Dini Ajmani, a former deputy assistant U.S. Secretary of the Treasury under President Joe Biden and assistant State Treasurer under Gov. Phil Murphy, also received the distinction.
