John M. De Lamater, the father of prominent Democratic strategist Michael De Lamater, died on August 5 after a nine-month battle with pancreatic cancer.  He was 70.

De Lamater spent 34 years as a special education teacher in Jersey City and was a member of the New Jersey Education Association and the Carpenters Local 15 union in Hackensack.  He was a sports official for many years.

Visitation will be held on Sunday from 2-6 PM at the Di Chiara Funeral Home in Lodi, and a funeral service will be held there on Monday at 10 AM, followed by an 11 AM mass at St. Joseph’s R.C. Church.

“My father was truly a throwback to a different time and era. He never used the internet, never sent an email, and always had his morning routine of going and purchasing the hard print newspapers,” Michael De Lamater said in a Facebook post.  “My father taught me many lessons in life good and bad, both intentionally and unintentionally. Perhaps the most important lesson was to always be direct with people in your life. Let them know how you feel. Let them know where you stand. Above all, always work your hardest and give it your best no matter what it is you’re doing.”

In addition to his son, De Lamater is survived by his wife, Karen, his daughter, Megan, and his grandson, Lucas.
